Across the Cascades to the high desert
Vancouver, WA to Bend, OR is about 170 miles — but it is the most scenic 170 miles we drive. We pick up I-205 across the Glenn Jackson, swing east on I-84 through the Gorge, then climb US-26 over Mount Hood and drop down US-97 into Bend.
Why the drive matters more than the mileage
This is not interstate the whole way — once we leave I-84 at Hood River, it is two-lane mountain road with weather that turns fast. That is why we drive every haul ourselves, never hand it off to a long-haul partner. Same uniformed crew loads in Vancouver, WA and unloads in Bend.
What I plan for
- US-26 pass conditions — chains stay in the truck Oct–May
- Altitude — the climb out of Government Camp can stress an underloaded truck, so we load right
- Dry-side wind — Bend gusts are real; we strap tighter past Madras
- Flat rate signed and locked in Vancouver before we roll
Most Bend customers also book a pack day the morning before — high-desert addresses are spread out and we want everything boxed when we hit the road. Heavy pieces (uprights, gun safes, gym equipment) ride on the same truck under piano & specialty. Compare with the Boise route if you are heading further east.
